Economic Sociology

Economic sociology deals with the sociological perspective of economic activities as well as with economic institutions and structures. At the Seminar of Sociology, the focus primarily lies on markets. Another focus is on reducing uncertainty.

On the emergence of markets

Markets have not always been the dominant form of economy everywhere. They only began their global triumphal march in the 15th century. Prof. Dr. Patrik Aspers from the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at the HSG explains in an interview what basic conditions are needed for their emergence.

Interview with Prof. Aspers on the role of uncertainty and ambiguity in the decision-making process

Chair for Sociology Prof. Dr. Patrik Aspers has been focused on reducing uncertainty in decision-making. He notes that when facing ambiguity, we strive to find ways to gain more certainty before coming to a decision. Increased certainty is often the result of knowing more… and though each problem is unique, a focus on how we arrive at these solutions can be applied to many different types of decisions. An interview.
